Compare the service path
A fiber-based architecture is not a single technology. Draw the entire route from WAN and core to the endpoint before comparing equipment quantities.
- Point-to-point Ethernet: one active port and matched optical link per access device.
- Multichannel Ethernet: a documented center optic, passive assembly and channel-matched terminal set; individual Ethernet channels remain distinct.
- PON: OLT service port, passive splitter, compatible ONUs and shared branch capacity.
Compare the complete scope
A smaller cable count does not establish lower total cost. Include the equipment that must be powered, maintained, licensed and replaced.
- Optics at both active ends, splitters/passive assemblies, ODF, patches and spare capacity.
- ONU/terminal adapters, remote power components, UPS coverage and cabinet access.
- Provisioning tools, AP capacity, security subscriptions, training and spares.
Ask for a measurable choice
Request a busiest-hour traffic assumption and an optical/power calculation for each candidate. A vendor line-rate figure is not a promised client rate.
- Record dedicated vs shared links and every aggregation bottleneck.
- Agree the loss margin, reserve ports and failure scenario.
- Pilot the actual firmware and endpoint mix before scaling.
