Give each service a traffic basis
A common network can carry different services, but they create different load and availability patterns. Write down the application assumptions before selecting ports or storage.
- CCTV: camera count, configured bitrate/codec, recording mode, playback and retention.
- IPTV: multicast/unicast platform, simultaneous channels and receiver compatibility.
- Voice: SIP/PBX platform, concurrent calls, provisioning, time/DNS and emergency-call obligations.
Control forwarding and access
Separate service VLANs and route only the necessary traffic. Quality of service is useful only when classification, trust and congestion points are configured consistently.
- IGMP snooping and a defined querier for supported multicast deployments.
- Voice classification/priority and sufficient link capacity at aggregation points.
- Restricted VMS, PBX and management access; guest clients cannot manage infrastructure.
Test power and applications together
A model may connect at Ethernet level without supporting the intended software service. Review standards and actual firmware with every vendor.
- Budget PSE power for startup, IR/heaters, AP mode and phone expansion modules.
- Confirm ONVIF/VMS functions and licensing at the exact CCTV model level.
- Test IPTV/voice registration, reboot/recovery and the required UPS failure scenario.
