Point-to-point optical Ethernet

A defined starting point for technical review.

This is an illustrative reference design, not a completed installation or a final site quotation. Quantities and capacities follow the assumptions below.

Scale & assumptions

  • 16 sample zones, each with 3 POS/data endpoints, 1 printer, 1 signage player, 1 AP and 1 camera. One of eight GE ports remains spare.
  • Central FS6300 and compatible ES4200 receivers; optical data and copper electrical conductors share a hybrid cable assembly. No electricity travels through glass fiber.
  • Reference hybrid run 80m. Cable conductor size, connectors, voltage drop, temperature and receiver input must be verified for the actual route.
  • Single uplink/core baseline. Critical payment and life-safety systems require their own availability/acceptance scope.

Why this architecture

FS6300V2-48UX2Q4C-EI is a candidate optical/electrical power source. Each ES4200 terminal uses its documented 40W total remote-input PoE budget. The source-side capacity must cover terminal input consumption, line losses and the chosen failure mode.

When to choose another approach

Point-to-point fiber with local 135W adapters gives ES4200 a larger 115W PoE budget and may suit zones with extra phones/cameras. PON can be compared for room-like tenant units, but requires ONUs, shared-capacity planning and local ONU power.

Compare the three architecture families →

Retail tenant zones

48 POS/data connections and 16 printer connections.

Service boundary: Tenant isolation and payment-provider requirements; no implied PCI compliance.

Public areas

16 sample APs, 16 signage players and 16 cameras.

Service boundary: Guest, signage and CCTV traffic separated with restricted management.

Operations / equipment room

WAN security, VMS and management, central remote-power source.

Service boundary: Device input, PoE output and UPS load calculated separately.

New construction

Coordinate hybrid routes and terminal mounting with tenant fit-out. Specify connector protection and accessible maintenance points; identify which outlets and services remain dependent on local tenant power.

Upgrade / retrofit

Compare existing copper tests and local power before replacing a floor network. Use ordinary fiber plus local terminal adapters where hybrid conductor paths or power budgets cannot be validated; pilot a busy retail zone before rollout.

Logical services & boundaries

Separate tenant/POS, staff, guest, signage, CCTV and management services with verified addressing and access rules. Payment-provider security requirements and broadcast/multicast control must be confirmed independently of the cabling architecture.

Declared inputs · reviewable calculations

Capacity and power, with their limits visible.

Planning allocations are assumptions, not measurements of unselected endpoints. Reconcile them with the final device classes, configuration and site tests.

Terminal ports

16 × 8 =128 ports; 16 × 7 =112 assigned; 16 spare.

Spare ports do not guarantee spare electrical capacity. An added phone changes the power budget.

Remote terminal output

1 AP at 16W + 1 camera at 15W =31W; 20% planning reserve =37.2W.

Below the 40W remote-input output limit. Another 8W phone would make 46.8W with reserve: use local power, redistribute loads or redesign.

Source power screen

Using the ES4200 published single PoE IN full-load input figure of 57W: 16 ×57W =912W; 20% allowance =1,094.4W before route-specific loss validation.

Below the FS6300 published 1,400W single-AC maximum configuration, but not approval of a real cable/PSU design. Verify the selected PSU, failover budget, cable loss and receiving voltage.

Traffic aggregation

16 dedicated 10GE optical ports aggregate into one 10GE core link: 16:1 nominal ratio.

Endpoint groups are GE and often lightly loaded, but busy-hour traffic must justify the ratio. Add a compatible higher-speed core/uplink configuration if required.
