Point-to-point optical Ethernet

A defined starting point for technical review.

This is an illustrative reference design, not a completed installation or a final site quotation. Quantities and capacities follow the assumptions below.

Scale & assumptions

  • Six floors, four work zones per floor. Each zone has three desktops, one AP, two cameras and one IP phone; 24 zones total.
  • A main rack and accessible zone enclosures; maximum assumed optical route 250m. Each copper endpoint channel stays within 100m.
  • Local AC is available at every zone, so ES4200 uses its 115W local-adapter output budget. The baseline does not rely on hybrid remote power.
  • The single 10GE core uplink is shared by all 24 zones; no campus failover is promised.

Why this architecture

FS5500V2-24UXS6Y-EI provides 24 base 2.5GE access ports. Each zone uses a dedicated 2.5GE link to an ES4200. The design deliberately excludes the optional 10GE port upgrade license from its base configuration.

When to choose another approach

Conventional rack PoE switches may be simpler where floor rooms and copper routes already exist. Hybrid remote power is possible only after matching components and loads: the ES4200 remote output limit is 40W, insufficient for the assumed 54W zone allocation.

Office work zones

72 desktop connections, 24 indoor APs and 24 phones.

Service boundary: Tenant/staff/voice VLANs; agree IP addressing, authentication and desk density.

Shared building areas

48 sample camera points and management connectivity.

Service boundary: CCTV and building access policies separate from tenant traffic.

Equipment room

Core routing, WAN security, server/storage links and optical distribution.

Service boundary: Controlled management access, labeled patches, UPS and ventilation.

New construction

Locate zone enclosures around the planned desk layout, provide maintained local AC and route labeled OS2 fibers from the optical aggregation rack. Keep spare enclosure ports and fibers for future tenant changes.

Upgrade / retrofit

Inventory copper certification, fibers, switch ports, VLANs and current outages. Retain sound horizontal copper, add fiber uplinks by floor and validate DHCP, voice and security access before moving the next tenant group.

Logical services & boundaries

Use tenant/staff, voice, surveillance, guest and management VLANs with a controlled routing policy. Authentication and ACLs must be tested with actual tenant services; VLANs do not create independent physical networks.

Electrical power path

FS5500 serves fiber data in this baseline. Every ES4200 has local 135W adapter input and 115W PoE output. Plan zone UPS coverage explicitly; a central core UPS does not back up unprotected zone outlets.

Declared inputs · reviewable calculations

Capacity and power, with their limits visible.

Planning allocations are assumptions, not measurements of unselected endpoints. Reconcile them with the final device classes, configuration and site tests.

Endpoint ports

24 × 8 = 192 ports. 24 × 7 = 168 assigned; 24 spare.

One spare port per zone is not spare WLAN capacity. Reassess if a tenant adds phones or access readers.

Uplink contention

24 × 2.5GE = 60Gb/s access line rate onto one 10GE core uplink: 6:1 nominal aggregation ratio.

Use measured concurrent demand. Upgrade the core/uplink as well as selected access ports if the project needs sustained higher capacity.

Zone PoE allocation

1 AP at 16W + 2 cameras at 15W + 1 phone at 8W = 54W. With 20% planning reserve: 64.8W.

Within 115W local output, above 40W remote-input output. The supplied local adapter is essential to this baseline.

License decision

All 24 access ports operate at base 2.5GE. Only 12 supported ports can be licensed to 10GE.

List the port IDs and license SKU if upgrading; do not quote this model as 24 × 10GE.
