PON / passive optical LAN

A defined starting point for technical review.

This is an illustrative reference design, not a completed installation or a final site quotation. Quantities and capacities follow the assumptions below.

Scale & assumptions

  • 100 guest rooms across five floors; one main equipment room. Four guest PON branches each serve 25 rooms, regardless of floor boundaries.
  • An illustrative 600m maximum optical route. Actual route length, splices, splitter loss and optical class are not yet surveyed.
  • One room ONU per room is a planning assumption. Its WLAN radio is not proof of room coverage; wall construction and client demand still require an RF survey.
  • Common-area sample: six APs, six cameras and six IP phones. This is not a complete security coverage plan. Single core, single OLT chassis and single uplink are the baseline.

Why this architecture

XGS-PON fits repeated room services and passive distribution when the operator accepts shared access capacity and local ONU power. S7506X-G with the specified XGS-PON board is a modular candidate, not an economical default for every 100-room property.

When to choose another approach

Point-to-point Ethernet to floor PoE switches may reuse more of an operating hotel's copper and simplify maintenance. Compare a smaller officially verified OLT platform for a standalone property; obtain its complete SKU/ONU interoperability record before substituting it.

Compare the three architecture families →

Guest rooms

Guest Wi-Fi, one TV connection and one IP phone connection per room.

Service boundary: Guest isolation and rate profiles; phones/TVs use local power. POTS is unused unless a compatible voice service is designed.

Lobby / restaurant / meeting areas

Six APs and six phones over four PoE ONUs.

Service boundary: Public WLAN and staff/voice VLANs; at mode on WA7338 disables pass-through PSE and USB.

Back office / surveillance

PMS/admin services and six sample camera streams to local recording.

Service boundary: Restricted administrative and security access; sizing and PMS/VMS integration remain application-specific.

New construction

Reserve room ONU locations, accessible 12V outlets, fiber routes and labeled splitter/ODF positions before fit-out. Plan power for every room phone and TV, and survey corridor/room radio coverage.

Upgrade / retrofit

Test existing copper and fiber first. Retain serviceable PoE switches for common areas, pilot one room/floor, migrate ONU profiles and voice/IPTV services in a booked outage, then roll back to the retained room service if acceptance fails.

Logical services & boundaries

Separate guest, staff/PMS, IPTV, voice, CCTV and management services. Confirm DHCP/DNS, guest isolation, multicast IGMP snooping/querier, QoS and permitted routes. WAN capacity is shared by the property; payment/PMS application policies are agreed with their vendors.

Electrical power path

Guest ONU: local 12V, <18W device maximum. Common-area ONU: local 54V, <150W input each; PoE 120W total and 30W/port. OLT/core and selected local outlets require a defined backup strategy; passive splitters provide no power.

Declared inputs · reviewable calculations

Capacity and power, with their limits visible.

Planning allocations are assumptions, not measurements of unselected endpoints. Reconcile them with the final device classes, configuration and site tests.

PON ports & spare outputs

4 × 32 = 128 guest outputs; 100 occupied. 1 × 4 = 4 common-area outputs; 4 occupied.

5 of the candidate 24-port OLT board's ports are used. Spare splitter outputs and spare OLT ports are different reserves.

Service ONU power

S01/S02: 2 ×30W AP +15W camera +8W phone =83W each. S03/S04: 30W AP +2 ×15W camera +2 ×8W phone =76W each.

With 20% planning reserve, the largest ONU needs99.6W, below120W. Each AP uses at mode and no port exceeds30W. Confirm actual negotiated PSE allocations and startup.

Shared capacity

25 occupied rooms per guest PON. Illustrative busy-hour requirement: 25 × 50Mb/s = 1.25Gb/s per branch, before TV and overhead.

Check multicast behavior and simultaneous peak demand against PON payload, the 10GE OLT uplink and the reference 1GE WAN. No per-room Internet guarantee is implied.

Recording input

6 sample cameras × assumed 6Mb/s = 36Mb/s video, before overhead and playback.

Retention, codec, motion/continuous mode, RAID and VMS licensing determine storage. Six cameras do not establish full hotel coverage.
